The Kannawidan Festival is a grand cultural celebration in Ilocos Sur, held annually to commemorate the province’s foundation. More than just a festival, it is a celebration of identity, history, and the enduring spirit of Ilocos Sur. More than just a day: The True Essence of Valentine’s Day

When someone mentions Valentines Day, what comes to your mind? chocolates? Gifts? or flowers? Most of the people think that Valentines Day are a day to give your partner a gift or a flower. But little did we know, it is more than just that. The day of hearts holds a much a deeper meaning—it is a day to honor love in all its forms. While its origins trace back to the story of Saint Valentine, who defied a Roman emperor’s ban on marriages, the celebration has evolved into a global tradition that extends beyond romantic relationships. Today, Valentine’s Day serves as a reminder to appreciate not only romantic partners but also family, friends, and even oneself.

Although couples often exchange love notes, gifts, and grand gestures, love is not limited to romance alone. Many people celebrate friendships through "Galentine’s" or "Palentine’s" Day, while families take time to express their affection for one another. Acts of love can be as simple as a heartfelt letter, quality time, or small gestures of kindness. Self-love is also an important aspect of this day, as individuals take the opportunity to practice self-care—whether through relaxation, pursuing hobbies, or treating themselves to something special. The essence of Valentine’s Day is about making the people in our lives feel valued and appreciated.

While February 14 is a dedicated day for love, the true message of Valentine’s Day is that love should be celebrated every day. Whether through romantic relationships, friendships, or self-care, expressions of love should not be confined to a single occasion. It is a reminder that love, in all its forms, is the most powerful and beautiful force in life. Whether with a partner, family, or friends, or even through personal reflection, the best way to celebrate Valentine’s Day is to spread love—not just on one day, but throughout the year.

Community-Based Research: A Journey to the rich history of Barangay Ayusan

Our Community-Based Research is focused on the History and the origin of a place. Barangay Ayusan Norte comes from a deep history. A place where time meets culture, and the culture enriches the place, while the people maintain and cherish it every single day.

During the 2nd quarter, one of our requirements is to make simple Community-based research in our own municipalities. Our search aims to inform, enrich, and examine the unique origin and history of Barangay Ayusan, located at the western part of Vigan City, it has historically played an important role in controlling and mitigating floodwaters coming out of Vigan, with its rivers guiding the waters out into the west Philippine Sea. It was for this reason it was aptly named “AYUSAN”.

To learn about the history of Ayusan Norte in Vigan City, we gathered information through various means. We began by visiting the barangay hall to acquire the necessary information for our research. Specifically, we sought permission to access insights on the population and to explore its historical records. We also talked to other people who have lived in Ayusan Norte to know about how the community has changed over the years. These personal accounts provided a unique and valuable perspective on the history of Ayusan Norte, showcasing its remarkable evolution.

This study aims to prevent that, by commemorating what life was like in the past, by remembering what it once was, we hope to awaken and teach the memory of it to those who will come next. With this research, we hope to enlighten the future generation and put emphasis on the importance of remembering our community’s historical origins.

One step at a time

The third quarter has been a period of growth and discovery, allowing me to gain valuable insights and skills. Building on the lessons from the second quarter, where I focused on strengthening my foundational knowledge and improving my study habits, I have now developed a deeper understanding of critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication. Additionally, I have discovered the importance of time management and self-discipline in balancing academic responsibilities with extracurricular activities. These experiences have shaped my perspective on learning, making me more adaptable and eager to explore new knowledge.

Despite these learnings, I encountered several challenges that tested my perseverance. In the second quarter, I struggled with organizing my workload and keeping up with assignments. While I improved in this area during the third quarter, new challenges arose, such as managing deadlines and staying motivated during difficult tasks. There were moments of self-doubt and stress, especially when faced with complex lessons or demanding workloads. However, I realized that seeking help from teachers, classmates, and online resources made a significant difference in overcoming these struggles. By developing better study habits and prioritizing tasks effectively, I was able to navigate through the quarter with resilience.

Moving forward, I will continue to apply the lessons
I have learned by staying organized, maintaining a positive mindset, and embracing challenges with determination. The progress I made from the second to the third quarter has given me confidence in my ability to adapt and grow. I plan to further improve my study techniques and actively engage in discussions to deepen my understanding of different subjects. Moreover, I will strive to maintain a balance between academics and personal growth, ensuring that I remain motivated and inspired in my learning journey. With these commitments, I look forward to facing the next quarter with confidence and enthusiasm.

From dragon dances to the giving of ang pao (red envelopes), the festivities showcase the blending of Filipino and Chinese customs, reinforcing unity and shared heritage. Many Filipinos also believe that celebrating Chinese New Year brings good luck, prosperity, and happiness for the coming year.

Vigan Cityhood: From Municipality to a Flourishing City

Vigan, known for its well-preserved Spanish-era architecture and rich cultural heritage, has undergone significant changes from being a municipality to becoming a thriving city. As a municipality, Vigan played a crucial role in trade and governance, serving as a hub for agriculture, fishing, and local craftsmanship. However, economic limitations hindered large-scale development, with the focus primarily on preserving historical structures, particularly the ancestral houses along Calle Crisologo.

Vigan officially became a city on September 7, 2001, through Republic Act No. 8988, allowing access to greater government funding and resources. This transition led to improved public services, education, and healthcare while boosting tourism. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vigan attracts visitors worldwide, sustaining local businesses and cultural festivals like the Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts. Sustainable tourism efforts, such as pedestrianized streets and eco-friendly transport, further highlight the city's commitment to heritage conservation.

The transition to cityhood has enabled Vigan to balance historical preservation with modern development. While embracing economic growth and infrastructural advancements, the city remains deeply rooted in its cultural legacy. Vigan’s evolution from a municipality to a flourishing city stands as a model for sustainable urban growth, showcasing how a community can progress while honoring its rich past.
